Network availability notes

Iridium has orbiting satellites. Here the proximity to the equator plays the decisive role, because at the equator the satellite density of the Iridium network is lowest. On the sea, however, this is negligible because there is a clear view all around, even to satellites located flat above the horizon.

Info for sailors

The area up to the Azores is also still covered by Thuraya. For sailors this is still suitable, but with reaching the coast the line of sight to the Thuraya satellite will be interrupted, so that on the Azores itself a Thuraya phone is no longer recommended. For the Azores itself, an Iridium phone is recommended.
